WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Fries and Yuca is a brand-new comedy web series perfect for a lighthearted binge watch. Based on true LatinX events, the series follows two millennial siblings (played by creators Fatima and Antonio) through a collection of events inspired by their imaginative personal lives. Each episode is about a minute long, making them easy to watch whenever you have a moment to spare. I, personally, watched them over the course of a couple days, mostly during work breaks to bring a touch of humor into my busy day.

Shows like this one that are short and sweet don’t usually have a lot of time to get you on board. Fries and Yuca didn’t waste any of it and reeled me in during the pilot episode. As they argued over who was the pickier eater, the line “eating Hello Fresh is not a local business” had me laughing out loud. I was sold. One of my favorite episodes was the sixth – “Working from Home.” In it, Fatima questioning whether her dress pants will fit after remotely working in whatever she wanted from the waist down was perfect. The way she went from smiling to closing her laptop after a meeting with a groan was also spot on. And, of course, seeing Antonio in different wigs to play both Fatima’s boss and their dad is a gag I loved throughout the series.

Fries and Yuca doesn’t try to do too much, which definitely works in the series’ favor. The beauty is in its simplicity; two siblings just reacting to the world around them in a very entertaining way. Antonio and Fatima are both easy to relate to and there’s a ton to love about this sweet little series. Another perfect example of what can be done when diverse voices are allowed to tell their own stories. The nuance of things like certain foods and relationships with family are told in an accurate and humorous way, without relying on stereotypes. It’s representation plus humor to bring a fun show to life. The ten-episode first season was a joy to watch and I hope they’re already planning a Season Two.
