WHAT? Get Real Estate

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

From the people that brought us the viral show about the hell of retail, “Rostered On,” comes a new venture “Get Real Estate.” The series, based on the real-life career of writer and director Marcello Barbaro, follows Marcus (Barbaro) and Julian (Roby Favretto) through the high intensity world of commercial and residential real estate. Marcus is the pro while Julian is the new kid on the block, soaking in all the occasionally questionable knowledge from Marcus. The first episode is also Julian’s first day on the job and Marcus wastes no time getting his new protege integrated into the fold.

Marcus is deliciously sleezy, the kind of real estate agent you’d imagine plasters his face on park benches with questionable morals and his own self-interest in mind before anyone else’s. Barbaro manages to make him extremely likable, despite some strange beliefs and general shamelessness. And Julian is the perfect character for him to play off of, the classic comedy straight man who’s just trying to learn. His questions elicit humorous rants from Marcus about how buyers would rather hear from agents with panda blood and palm oil fueled BMW’s over environmentally friendly Priuses, the importance of a gavel at auctions or the theater of the suburbs as Marcus calls them.

It’s the perfect mix of ridiculous thoughts rooted in truth that make “Get Real Estate” successful. I truly believe an agent like Marcus exists and can perfectly picture the very scenarios in the show playing out in the real world. Barbaro’s real life experience in the field certainly comes into play and I don’t think the series would be as enjoyable without him.

The entirety of the series takes place in a Porsche Cayenne, which is sort of a character in itself. Other players pop up throughout the series, all jumping into Marcus’ passenger seat, as he’s constantly on the road looking for the next big listing. But Barbaro is truly the star of the show and the supporting players definitely help him shine brighter.

Fans of workplace comedies will enjoy “Get Real Estate” and even a minor interest in anything HGTV related will make it even better. The series covers everything from mortgages to competing agents, divorce to parenting and never failed to keep me entertained.
