WHAT?  Nottingham Web Series

BY: Ryerson’s Media Production Program & Ryerson’s Transmedia Zone

WHO? This series is created, written and directed by Ayelen Barrios.

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

This is a new spin on a classic tale. Nottingham Web Series is a gender bent and modern take on the legend of Robin Hood.

Rory (played by Samantha Levine) is a Junior at Nottingham University in modern times and is outraged by the disparity in how the female student body is treated in relation to the male student body. Once Rory is passed over for an unpaid internship as a coder for the university she decides to use her alter ego, Robin Hood, to right the injustices that she sees on the campus.

It seems the five available internships were awarded to all male students. Other injustices that are pointed out by Rory/Robin are that there are weight loss ads in the women’s washroom and posters warning girls to protect themselves against rape and sexual assault whereas the ads in the men’s washroom are for sandwiches.  In the engineering building on the third floor there is another inequity in the washrooms. The women’s room only has two stalls so only two women can use the facilities at the same time whereas the men’s room has four urinals and two stalls so six men can use the facilities at the same time. Clearly, this is sending the message that in an engineering building they are encouraging and catering to more men in the engineering field than female. The list of gender inequities goes on and on and on.

If you are looking for a new spin on a classic and want some female empowerment to embolden you to take on the patriarchy, then Nottingham Web Series is the series for you.  The episodes are short and sweet, and the message is relevant and one that every woman (young and old) needs to see. Take a page from Rory/Robin, don’t just accept inequities and injustices. Stand up for yourself and for others (Though maybe don’t do it by means of vandalism. Just a suggestion!).
