WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

OK|LA follows two best friends, Sara (Edminsten) and Montana (Mooney), as they get themselves into (and out of) some truly bizarre stuff while living and thriving in Oklahoma City. This heartwarming new web series was released late last year and is a total hidden gem I’m so glad I stumbled upon.

Strong female friendships in television shows is something that I’m always interested in and the dynamic between Sara and Montana does not disappoint. You can tell the two are close off-screen because everything is so natural, and their immaculate vibes shoot off the screen. The pilot episode was incredible! I loved watching Montana’s struggle of sticking to her own vision or doing what she thought her professor and classmates wanted and the way Sara gave her endless support throughout. It perfectly set the stage for the rest of the series.

The third episode of the first season, “The Other Friend,” was definitely one of my favorites. When Montana plans to introduce Sara to one of her acquaintances they flashback to all the times that very scenario has worked out horribly for them. Montana is a self-proclaimed “asshole magnet,” not realizing just how bad it’s been until Sara spells it out for her; the people she’s brought around have had very questionable views. Things seem different this time around though as Sara and Jade (Jade Anderson) hit it off almost immediately. The episode offers interesting insight on the main pair’s friendship and really showcases the strength of their chemistry, both in and out of character.

OK|LA is full of genuine moments between the two and the finale shows off some of the best. Sara lying about their flight’s departure time because she knew Montana would be running late was one of the most relatable. Their attempted hike to the Hollywood sign and the rough accommodations they originally had booked in Los Angeles felt like something directly pulled from my personal adventures with family and friends. Their sweet discussion about the decision to move was raw and vulnerable, leaving the season with an ending as strong as it started.

You can honestly tell how much of a passion project this was for these creators, which makes the final product that much more exciting to see. Over the last couple of years, they went from raising money via Kickstarter to make this dream a reality to flying out to LA to shoot their last episode. I’m a huge fan of artists creating their own work and doing whatever it takes to bring their art to life because I know how unbelievably hard the process can be, so kudos to this trio of friends.

If you’re looking for a great series about friendship, want to support some great up and coming creative minds or you’re in need of a short and sweet comfort show, check out OK|LA. I hope this season is the first of many.
