Why Should I Watch?

Comedy, sex, drama and heart – The New 30 has it all.  The series opens on Elliot’s 40th birthday, which he is refusing to acknowledge. Elliot (DaJuan Johnson) was just fired from his firm, ruined a seven-year relationship to Kelvin (Akende Munalula) by cheating on him and is still living with his sweet and supportive ex because he cannot afford to move out on his own.  If I had to come up with one word to define Elliot, it would be lost.  When he is stressed he paints and I can assure you with the events that transpire in this series, Elliot has a lot of painting in his future.

What I like most about the series is that it starts you in the middle of the story and you have to piece things together as you go along. For instance, the very first scene is Elliot making out with a man in his bathroom.  Later, we find out that the man is Diego (Dennis Mencia). And even later in the episode we find out, at the same time that Elliot does, that Diego is currently dating Elliot’s best friend Reid (Dieterich Gray). For some unknown reason, Elliot and Reid have been quite estranged from each other for a while. The fact that Elliot is now involved with Reid’s boyfriend does not help matters.

That is just one of several storylines that are occurring at the same time in this series.  My favorite couple in the series are Preston (David Heckel) and Aaron (Eric Bunton).  The love and trust that these two characters have for one another was so incredibly captivating. Even though they had to deal with very stressful issues such as whether or not they were going to get married; whether they were going to have children; whether they needed to have a threesome to make sure they didn’t have any regrets. Despite the obstacle or issue these two very different characters always kept an open and honest channel of communication. Their relationship was one of the most realistic and beautiful portrayals I have seen. I wanted to know so much more about them and would have gladly watched a spin off series all about their relationship.

The series is only six episodes long and all of the episodes have already been released on YouTube. I highly recommend that you join Elliot and all of his friends for the ups and downs of The New 30!
