Q) How would you describe your sound?

A) I would put my sound in an electro-pop and deep house chill zone for the most part. However, when I get in the mood, I definitely go to traditional house songs (keeps my toes dancing!)..

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) I used to rely on the great lyricists for inspiration – Linda Perry, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell. I think lyrics are the key to telling a great story.  But dance music is just as much about the sound as it is the story. I love the works of BT, Chris Malinchak and Tobtok who really deliver a fusion of sounds.  I suspect they all influence me in some way.

Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Let Me Ask You.”

A) Today so many people hide behind their phone. I actually think communication has gotten worse than ever before. People just don’t talk anymore. They text, which is not the same. This song is about all the questions that we want to ask someone in our life but are too afraid to ask them.

Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?

A) I suspect their connection will be with the hook.  When you have a connection with a new long interest, some of the first questions people have is…does this person know how to love?  Will this person take a chance on us?  Will they let go of the past long enough to give it a shot?

Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?

A) The video was so much fun to make!  It went a totally different direction than the original song intent, but I think it works. The man and woman were married, and something happened that split them apart.  You are not sure what happened, but the woman roams around their past home reliving the past.  Her husband, years later, takes the form of another man and finds himself drawn to a house. As a ghost hunter, he is not sure why this house is so special, but eventually figures it out.  It kind of ties into the song’s “questions” about love, but that’s about it.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?

A) Each song is different.  I have written both ways, it really doesn’t matter. It is all about what I feel that day, what inspires me.  Songs can never be forced…they must be felt.

Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?

A) I produce all my own vocals.  At times, I add my ears for some of the instrumental portions.

Q) What can fans expect from a live Kim Cameron & Side FX performance?

A) It really depends on the venue. For big festivals we pull out all the dance records and make the show fun, full of big sounds.  For smaller venues, it’s very intimate, personal…with some storytelling.

Q) What songs off your Carpe Musicam album have you been most enjoying performing live?

A) So far, all of them! [smiles] I performed “Let Me Ask You” for the first time during Grammy Weekend.  I wasn’t sure how that would sound, but it worked out okay.  “Share My Pillow” always comes across in a great way, but so does “Fearless Lovers”…Can you tell I really like this album?

Q) How did you decide to only feature six songs with remixes for the album?

A) I always go with how it feels.  I believe it’s not about quantity, but quality.  If that means an album is only six songs, then, that is the right number.

Q) This is your 11th album! What continues to motivate you to make music?

A) I believe I need help!  Yes, I am a serial songwriter…It’s a sickness that I cannot seem to get over. [smiles] This year will be all about the animation film and the associate song track for it.  Very different music for the movie…tropical, reggae, fun.

Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new album as a whole?

A) I want people to have fun with this one.  Dance in the streets or while making dinner.  This is a very happy album…I want that for all the listeners.

Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?

A) I loved, loved performing in Croatia. Ibiza also was a blast. I guess I am partial to Europe. I dig the vibe across the pond.  I love how people really support indie artists.  It feels good over there.

Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?

A) Chris Malinchak…for sure.

Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?

A) Right now, a lot reggae artists for the new album/movie: Etana, Tanya Stephens.

Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?

A) I think it’s easier for people to find out where I am performing, what new material is coming out. Social media helps broadcast fast-paced artist news or last-minute shows.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?

A) Wow…I just appreciate anyone who takes the time to listen and support my work.  It means the world to me that people care…no joke.
