Legacies – Yup, It’s a Leprechaun, All Right

It’s another spare assembly at the Salvatore School. They’ve got enough students to meet the state of Virginia’s requirements, but Alaric (Matt Davis) has to warn them that the growing pains will persist. Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) takes to the podium to give the noticeably smaller student body an idea of what the future looks like. Long story short, fewer students means fewer tuition checks so no more dances, field trips or smoothie bars. But she has a plan which she calls “Fundraiser Month.” But her explaining how they’re going to raise money is interrupted by a delivery man. He serves Ric with some bad news. There’s a brand new property tax for $91,000. Worse news is that they’ve got seven days to pay up or the city gets the school.

Lizzie decides that’s not an acceptable outcome and has a new plan. Instead of Fundraiser Month, now they’ll have Fundraiser Day. They plan to have all of the bake sales, car washes and auctions today. In the meantime, Alaric plans to go to the bank for a loan assuming they can’t sell enough cupcakes.

MG (Quincy Fouse) missed the assembly because he’s got other problems. Remember that time Alyssa (Olivia Liang) gave him the ascendant but everyone thinks it was destroyed? Well, she dropped the glamour spells so now it could easily be discovered and it nearly is when Lizzie comes barging in. She’s there to recruit his help, but he’s trying to get rid of her so she doesn’t see the ascendant. In the end, he agrees to do all the baking. When Lizzie leaves he tries for what appears to be the billionth time to call Alyssa with the magic mirror. She doesn’t answer though.

Alaric prepares to go to the bank and is surprised when Kaleb (Chris Lee) informs him he wants to come. Alaric tells Kaleb that since he’s a teenager, bankers aren’t going to take him seriously. However, Kaleb says he’s also a vampire so he can easily compel the bankers to give them all the money they need. Alaric explains that would be unethical. Kaleb points out that banks routinely do unethical things, so why play by the rules. Alaric sternly states that it was his human error that got them into this, so he’ll find a human solution. But vhe asks Kaleb to stay at the school and make sure that fundraiser day is magic free.

Elsewhere Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Cleo (Omono Okojie) are bonding over art. Cleo is trying to encourage Hope to heal through art, but Hope hasn’t really been able to create since Landon died. Cleo says she was similarly artistically blocked after a major less. Although, we don’t follow up on what the loss was. She suggests that Hope use Landon’s remains to move on. At first she’s not sure, but then she agrees.

Alaric goes to the bank and is unpleasantly surprised by the familiar face he finds in the loan officer. It’s Vera Lillian (Tanya Christiansen), Dana’s mother. Dana was one of Malivore’s first victims, but as far as the town knows she was tragically killed by a mountain lion partying in the woods. Ric’s confused because previously the Lillian family owned the town’s pharmacy. Vera explains that the loss of her daughter hit the family hard. She and her husband split up and she needed a change in career. This could get uncomfortable.

Back at the school fundraiser things are not going well. No one has showed up because they threw together a month of events in a matter of hours. Lizzie is freaking out and ready to look for a magical solution to their problems, but she’s stopped by Kaleb who tells her about his promise to Alaric. Lizzie points out that Kaleb thinks Alaric’s “no magical shortcuts” rules are stupid. Kaleb says he does think they’re stupid, but he thinks that maybe things have to implode a little for Ric to realize how much his rules don’t work.

The car wash isn’t the only thing going badly during fundraiser day. MG is finding baking a lot harder than he thought. He has vampire speed, but the oven doesn’t. Josie (Kaylee Bryant) walks in and notices the disaster and asks how she can help. MG explains the situation and Josie takes pity on him. She’s going to help him with the baking, but she has a study date with Finch (Courtney Bandeko) so she needs to be back at school by lunch.

Lizzie and Kaleb’s disagreement is interrupted by the sight of a rainbow and then screams. But not human screams, they stumble upon a leprechaun in the basement. Kaleb manages to subdue it and they throw it in the dungeon. Lizzie does some reading and learns that leprechauns attract wealth and urge humans to spend copious amounts of money. She thinks the leprechaun is the solution to their problems. Kaleb reminds her of Alaric’s rule, but Lizzie says the leprechaun is the perfect loophole. They won’t be using any magic, the leprechaun will.

Outside Jed (Ben Levin) and Wade (Elijah B. Moore) are pretty bummed out. They’re all read for a carwash, but they have no customers. That is until they are swarmed by customers. The leprechaun’s worked its magic! People are buying things left and right. What could possibly go wrong?

Josie and MG venture into the garden. Josie’s idea is to find a herb that will cause the baked goods to bake at an accelerated rate. That way they’ll finish in half the time. They find the herb and Josie tastes it first to be safe, but then she feels the urge to be way too honest with MG. She physically can’t stop herself from telling the truth. She realizes she had the wrong herb as it was truth weed not the accelerant she wanted.

Hope and Cleo are in the art studio missing out on the action. Hope took Cleo’s advice and used Landon’s remains to make a sculpture. It’s a bust of Landon’s head. Apparently, it’s pretty good looking because a woman bursts into the studio and wants to buy it. She says she’s willing to pay anything for it. Hope’s hesitant, but the woman is willing to pay $91,000. Hope says it’s a hard no because the sculpture has more sentimental value. The woman doesn’t take this well. She tries to attack the girls, but Hope subdues her. Cleo and Hope decide to check on the rest of fundraiser day.

Cleo and Hope go talk to Lizzie and get an eyeful of the townies who are now literally throwing their money at the school. Hope demands to know what’s going on and explains about the woman who got violent with them over her refusal to sell. Lizzie reluctantly explains about the monster and says the woman was probably an isolated incident. On cue two men start brawling and knock over a table. Not so isolated.

Hope is angry that Lizzie didn’t immediately tell her about another monster, but Lizzie says she’s not going to apologize for prioritizing saving the school over Hope’s needs for a change. Hope asks what that’s supposed to mean and we cut away from the argument. Kaleb and Cleo talk and she gets a crash course in what Malivore is and what it means for the school. Lizzie and Hope don’t necessarily come to an agreement, but Hope resolves to find out what the leprechaun was sent to retrieve and goes to the dungeons.

So, unlike some of the monsters, the leprechaun doesn’t talk. None of Hope’s translation spells are working. Cleo is concerned that Hope is torturing the creature. Also, we learn that Cleo isn’t wild about how willing the Salvatore students are to kill. She believes every life is sacred. Hope says she doesn’t want to torture of kill the leprechaun, just make use of it.

In the woods MG and Josie share a heart to heart. Josie says it’s for the best that her being supernaturally stoned is keeping her from her date. She says her and Finch would only end in disaster. MG tells her she should be a little more highly of herself and not be afraid to open up to Finch. Giving the pep talk to Josie inspires MG to take control in his own way. In the meantime, Josie decides to go talk to Finch even if she is still a little high.

At the bank Alaric is turned down for the loan. He assumes the rejection has something to do with Lizzie and Dana’s feud, but that’s not the problem. Vera says she can tell he really cares about his school; however, she feels the school is a bad investment. Yet, there might be an unconventional line of credit. Vera propositions him and Ric is somewhat horrified, but Vera says to think of the children.

Malivore monsters always come in search of something. Once the leprechaun finds whatever it’s looking for it’ll lead her to the prison world portal. Cleo doesn’t understand why at first, but then it becomes clear: Hope hasn’t fully accepted Landon being gone. She thinks there’s a possibility that Landon is trapped in the prison world and not dead. So, she casts a locator spell and they follow the leprechaun.

Ric is saved from Vera’s proposition by an assistant running into Vera’s office and telling them that someone stole a van full of money.  Ric makes a break for it and he, Hope, and Cleo end up in the same place – a garage with the leprechaun’s stolen goods. A confused Alaric is attacked by the leprechaun. Worried for Alaric, Cleo casts a spell that results in the leprechaun exploding. There’s green goo and money all over the garage. And Hope storms off angrily because now her one lead is dead.

Josie is looking for Finch, but finds Ethan (Leo Howard) who tells her that Finch works at the Grill, but warns her to be careful with him. Josie finds her and apologizes and admits that she stood her up because she was afraid. Finch is a little annoyed, but agrees to give her another chance. She and Josie will go on a real date.

MG has a tense talk with Alyssa, who explains she removed the glamour spell because their relationship is over. At first MG is annoyed but he decides he’s had enough dishonestly and is going to come clean about the ascendant. Elsewhere, Kaleb has also been inspired to be honest. He tells Alaric about his part in the leprechaun scam, meaning that he didn’t enforce the “no magical shortcuts” ways. Alaric is pretty calm about the whole thing. And although he didn’t get the loan, he took some of the money the leprechaun exploded all over the garage. So, the school will live to see another day.

Cleo and Hope have a talk about what happened earlier. Cleo is sorry that Hope is upset, but she was afraid for Dr. Saltzman. She also points out that she and Hope have been hanging out for days, but Hope hasn’t asked her anything about herself. She shares that her family was brutally murdered which is why she’s so opposed to killing. Cleo also says that Hope is obsessed with Landon. But Hope is undeterred as she’s going to find him.

Lizzie is cleaning up the kitchen and MG comes in and apologizes for the bake sale that never happened. But Lizzie says it all worked out. Also, they gave back the money that the leprechaun didn’t eat because it seemed fair to the townspeople. Speaking of doing the right thing, MG comes clean about the ascendant. Lizzie isn’t angry exactly, just sad. She said if he’d been honest before she might’ve been able to help him. Now, that might be hard. MG turns around and finds a very angry Hope standing with them.
