The fourth season of Lucifer opens with the king of hell feeling some serious angst. For those of you who don’t remember at the end of last season Lucifer (Tom Ellis) revealed his devil face to Chloe (Lauren German). We learn that, much to Lucifer’s distress, in the aftermath of the showdown with Cain (Tom Welling) that Chloe left Los Angeles on an extended vacation.

Through a rather violent confrontation in his nightclub and then with a conversion with Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) we discover he’s worried Chloe thinks he’s evil and will never come back. In the month that she’s been gone he’s been showing up to crime scenes in hopes of seeing her. At the LAPD some things have changed. Dan (Kevin Alejandro) blames Lucifer for Charlotte’s (Tricia Helfer) murder. Ella (Aimee Garcia) is having a serious crisis of faith. And Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) is still in heaven. Just as Lucifer’s telling Ella he thinks Chloe’s gone for good the woman in question shows up ready to solve a murder.

With regard to the case, a beekeeper named Bob’s been killed. Lucifer’s more concerned about Chloe. He can’t quite believe that she’s really cool with everything that happened despite her insistence, which is what he tells Linda (Rachael Harris) in their therapy session. Like the good doctor she is, Linda wants to focus on Lucifer’s feelings. She wants to focus on the fact that angels can manifest their feelings in reality and how Lucifer might feel about what’s happening with Chloe. However, the devil’s got a one track mind. He’s concerned Chloe’s in shock or denial or is just plain terrified of him. Linda says from experience that what the detective’s experiencing is tough, but she’s not her patient. How about that time Lucifer killed someone? No dice. Lucifer decides he’s gonna make it his mission to get Chloe to accept his devilishness.

At the police station Lucifer plays up his King of Hell status, trying to get a reaction out of Chloe. But Chloe doesn’t react. When the duo go seeking a possible suspect in Bob the Beekeeper’s murder, Chloe explains that when she saw Lucifer’s devil face she was freaked out, but after some time away she’s chill about it. Back to the case, while gauging Chloe’s reaction Lucifer uses his devil mojo on a guy named Glenn Dobbs (Thom Rivera) to get some answers. It turns out Glenn wanted Bob dead because he found him super scary. This doesn’t mesh with the warm and cuddly image witnesses painted of Bob, but Glenn says Bob beat him bloody and is surprised to find out he’s gone. Not the killer.

As Lucifer and Chloe leave Glenn, Chloe says they’re being followed by someone armed. They lead their pursuer into a warehouse of sorts and Lucifer wants to take the opportunity to show off his devil strength. He’s still not buying that Chloe’s fine. He lifts the man into the air like a sack of grapes and Chloe yells at him to stop. The man’s got a badge. It seems he’s a federal agent and Bob the beekeeper was in witness protection.

US Marshall Luke Reynolds (Sasha Roiz) was Bob’s handler before he was a beekeeper Bob was an enforcer for the mob. He had a thing for beating people half to death with doorknobs. Hence, the encounter with Glenn. Chloe wonders if Bob’s ex-employers might’ve killed him and wants to question them. Reynolds warns the mob doesn’t talk to cops and Lucifer says they will with the devil at her side.

When Chloe goes home she finds Maze there handcuffed to a chair. This is to make Chloe feel safe. Chloe points out this was sort of creepy, but says she’s cool with everything. Maze is asking about Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) as she misses the little human and wants to make things right with her. Chloe says she’s going to stay with her father for a bit and that Trixie’s still upset, which visibly disturbs Maze.

Elsewhere Lucifer’s having a drink when his brother flies in. Amenadiel took Charlotte to Heaven. Lucifer’s happy for Charlotte, but surprised to see his brother. All he’s wanted for the past year was to go back to Heaven so why’s he back on Earth now that he has his wings back? Amenadiel makes various excuses about being needed. It’s probably not the whole story.

Chloe and Lucifer go to a game of bocce ball to interrogate the crime family Bob the Knob worked for. They start with a guy named Frank (Bruno Amato) who insists him being in LA is coincidental. A lie. Then, he reveals that yeah he and Bob were rivals, but they grew to respect each other. Therefore, he had no reason to kill him. It turns out Frank’s even relieved Bob sold out his uncle, but the plot thickens. Someone tipped them off that Bob was in LA via note. They gave the note to Bob. Back to the drawing board.

At the station Chloe talks with Reynolds about the possibility that Lenore, Bob’s wife (Alice Rietveld), knew about his past. And Dan and Lucifer have a tense conversation. Dan really hates Lucifer now.

Lucifer goes to Linda because Chloe flinched when he tried to touch her. Linda thinks Lucifer’s projecting, which he continues to do. He decides to help Chloe so he needs to solve the case and runs off.

Speaking of the case, Chloe tries to console Dan about Charlotte on the way to a crime scene. He says he just needs to focus on work. Their conversation is interrupted by finding Lenore’s house trashed. She might’ve been kidnapped.

Lucifer shows up and keeps trying to connect Lenore’s possible disgust over her husband’s past to Chloe’s feelings for him. Chloe’s not biting. She figures out that Frank might’ve taken her.

Linda and Maze talk about Chloe’s feelings about Trixie possibly hating her only to be interrupted by Amenadiel, who wonders if they need his help. He’s bummed out to find that things are fine between them. More so that no one on earth actively needs his divine intervention. So, why does he want to stay? Maze says it’s because Earth might be his home now.

Plot twist. It seems that Reynolds’ FBI charges have had a mysterious way of dying over the years. Their enemies keep finding them. Lucifer works out that Reynold’s must be tipping them off. Ella tracks Reynold’s down through his cell and their off.

At a pool Reynolds has poor Lenore strapped to a chair and appears to be ready to push her in. This is Frank’s Mob signature. Luckily, Lucifer and Chloe show up. Reynolds explains for years he’s been watching criminals ride off into the sunset after a lifetime of horrible actions. He snapped. Yet Chloe points out that Lenore’s innocent. From Reynolds’ perspective Lenore’s crime is that she loved Bob despite knowing about his mobster dealings. Reynolds’ gives a speech about how criminals never change. Lucifer tells him it’s not his place to play judge and Reynolds shoots him before kicking Lenore into the pool.

Chloe jumps in and tells Lucifer not to let him get away, which he doesn’t thanks to Lucifer’s devil strength. This does seem to be kind of scaring Chloe. Reynolds is arrested and Lenore lives.

Back at the station Maze runs into Trixie. At first she wants to run away, but Trixie spots her before she can leave. Maze finally apologizes and Trixie accepts saying that she could never stay mad a Maze. Does this mean that Chloe lied, but why?

Elsewhere Dan and Amenadiel reunite and Amenadiel does his best to console Dan. He tells him that Charlotte’s in heaven and at peace, but Dan’s not a religious guy. Amenadiel doesn’t reveal his wing’s to Dan, but he looks in square in the eye and takes him by the shoulders and insists Charlotte Richards is in Heaven. This time Dan believes him and they share a hug. Amenadiel decides to stop making excuses and admit that he wants to stay in LA because he likes it there.

At LUX Lucifer’s playing piano and Chloe shows up to talk. Lucifer says he’s had a millenia to accept the devil in him, so it’s unfair to expect Chloe to accept it right away. Chloe insists she accepts Lucifer and just sees him as her partner. Lucifer seems relieved and says Chloe’s acceptance is all that matters.

Lucifer and Chloe part ways and then we find Chloe in a church. She breaks down and starts sobbing only to be interrupted by a priest that she knows apparently. He says they knew this would be tough, but what she’s doing is what’s best for everyone including Lucifer. He asks if she’s ready for the next step. She says yes.
