WHAT? Bitter Homes and Gardens

WHO? Fielding Edlow

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Bitter Homes and Gardens is a comedy web series about the realities (and hilarities) of married life. One part chaos, another part raunchy and a whole lot of realism brings this series to life with the brand-new second season available now. Real life married couple Fielding Edlow and Larry Clarke star as two barely in love significant others who start fights more often than they make love. With the threat of a global pandemic looming outside their doors, tensions are at an all-time high and they’re both desperate to win the relationship.

Honestly, this show made me want to bicker with a husband I don’t even have. And I mean that in the best way. Their frustration was as palpable as it was entertaining and it’s a miracle they managed to stay together this long. It’s not always the huge blow out fights that lead to a couple’s demise – sometimes it’s the small seemingly nonsensical ones that wear down the foundation and Bitter Homes and Gardens portrayed that beautifully. Their debate about whether they’d hold each other’s hands while suffering from radiation was far more entertaining than it should’ve been and an early introduction to their problems. Could Fielding have just lied? Yes, and it would’ve made their conversation a lot smoother. But she was brutally honest instead, much to Larry’s dismay. Thus lies their problems.

Episode five entitled “Killing Jason Bateman” had to be my favorite. It starts off strong with Larry struggling to enunciate enough for Siri to a very questionable FaceTime from Fielding’s father and leads into an impromptu Pandemic Picnic. Despite Fielding planning it, she seems just as surprised when Ava and Lance (Christine Woods and Ahmed Bharoocha) drop by with a basket and some chairs. As they struggle to interact with their friends, you see Bitter Homes and Gardens at its best. Blaming their lack of a picnic basket on intermittent fasting and Fielding’s Rite Aid rant are so ridiculous and she describes the public’s excitement over “Peaky Blinders” in such a disgustingly clever way I’ll let you hear it for yourself.

Bitter Homes and Gardens is a great watch, plain and simple. Edlow’s comedic prowess is on full display in this series. There were so many great jokes and snide remarks throughout each episode that I’m sure I missed some of them. Clarke plays off her wonderfully, capturing the essence of the lovable everyman with ease. At times you want to root for them and then they start roasting each other and you think you better not. Either way, if you’ve ever been in a relationship that went on a little too long or you’re a comedy fan, Bitter Homes and Gardens is for you – a deliciously bingeable series, worth every second.
