WHAT? Nova’s Quarantine

WHY SHOULD I WATCH?

Nova’s Quarantine is a one season web series that may hit a little too close to home for everyone right now. The series follows Nova (LaChrisha Brown) as she tries to balance her social life and career throughout quarantine. The end result is a journey of self-discovery through isolation. With so much free time on her hands, Nova gets to learn more about herself and her relationships. She thought she had her life together completely and quarantine is her wake up call.

I’ve seen my fair share of quarantine style shows pop up on my feed over the last few months, but only a select few have really caught my eye. Nova’s Quarantine was one of them. The importance of communication is a common theme throughout the series, both with people who are close to us and the ones we found ourselves entertaining solely due to quarantine loneliness. And Nova encourages people to speak their truths.

The show is funny, bringing up the initial toilet paper hoarding and the short-lived “Tiger King” obsession. However, it also acts as a serious social commentary; shedding a light on those who were more concerned with getting haircuts than anything, the missteps from the government and the harsh realities that stay present despite people acting like it’s over.

There is also a really sweet moment in episode four where Nova’s ex-fiance, Dwayne (Mike Head), opens up about his anxieties surrounding the pandemic. That’s when the series really hit its peak for me, when these two really start talking. It is this particular episode that has them finally discussing what they are and why their relationship ended so abruptly. In a strange way, it was being locked up that forced them to have a conversation they may not have had otherwise and ultimately leads to something positive in the form of opening a dialogue. Not having to see each other in person made it easier for them to be completely honest.

Nova’s Quarantine is a total delight. It is six episodes of both the best and the worst parts of quarantine with a little touch of the ridiculousness added in, too. It’s also a series everyone should be able to relate to right now and is well worth a late night binge.
