“Niklaus, don’t…put it down,” Elijah (Daniel Gillies) begs as Klaus (Joseph Morgan) holds a white oak stake to his chest. “Walk away Elijah, you shouldn’t be here. It’s time to end this chapter get rid of the dark magic once and for all,” Klaus tells his brother. Suddenly, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) appears wanting to know what’s going on. She realizes that her father lied and deceived her during her first transition when he told her that he arranged for the dark magic to be put in something safe. Klaus tells his daughter that he is doing this to protect her and doesn’t need Elijah’s permission.  “I’ve made my decision,” Klaus says.  “And I’ve made mine,” adds Hope using magic to incapacitate her father.

When next we see Klaus, he is chained up in the dungeon with Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), Elijah and Rebekah (Clarie Holt) standing over his sleeping form. Kol is sick and tired of being called into the family fold every time Klaus is going through some sort of melodrama.  Annoyed, Kol walks out of the room. Elijah assures Rebekah that their brother will be back.

Meanwhile, Freya (Riley Voelkel) is talking with Hope about the effects the dark magic will have on Klaus; he’ll go mad within hours and be unrecognizable. Hope suggests a spell to divide the dark magic among the Mikaelson siblings again. Freya reminds that would put them back where they started.  She tells Hope to accept the fact that there’s no magic strong enough this time.

In the dungeon, Klaus wakes up to the voice of Mikael (Sebastian Roché) ordering him to wake up. Mikael taunts how Klaus being put down by his own daughter puts a stain on Mikael’s legacy. Then, Cami (Leah Pipes) appears. She urges Klaus not to listen to Mikael’s baiting. But Mikael continues.  He tells Klaus that he (Klaus) should have followed his instincts and murdered Hope before she was born as she’s responsible for his feeble state. “The girl’s right upstairs,” Mikael says. But Cami encourages Klaus to run and he flees the dungeon.

In the quarter, Hope and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) look for Klaus. Hope tells Marcel she has to find her father because she doesn’t want to be an orphan at fifteen. Then who would take care of her? Marcel? Elijah? When Marcel tries to stop her, Hope uses magic on him to immobilize him.

Meanwhile, Freya is using a locator spell and map to find Klaus. Elijah laments that he should have taken the dark magic from his brother when he had the chance. He refuses to let Klaus suffer torment and madness. Freya finds Klaus.  “He’s in the quarter,” she tells Elijah.

In the French Quarter, Klaus is fighting the vision of Mikael when Hope appears asking her dad to go home with her. “Kill her…it’s the only way to make it right,” Mikael urges. Cami appears again and tells Klaus she knows his heart. As Hope is reaching for Klaus’ hand, Elijah rushes up and snaps his brother’s neck.

Back at the mansion, Freya is with Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) and is looking for a syphoning spell to shift some of the dark magic to someone else at least temporary to give Klaus some peaceful moments in the final time of his life. She notices that Vincent is packing and he tells her that he is leaving New Orleans for good. Freya hopes Vincent will change his mind; she asks him to be the father of hers and Keelin’s (Christina Moses) baby.  Vincent says her can’t.

Kol is driving out of town but has to stop the car when he sees Rebekah standing in front of him.  She calls him a coward for leaving while Kol says that Rebekah doesn’t want to reach for her own happiness. “I’m going home to the woman I love instead of wallowing in this codependent nightmare we call family,” Kol says. He reminds of all the time Klaus has daggered them and says they should celebrate that Klaus’ death. But Rebekah thinks they should celebrate he has changed and is finally doing something for someone other than himself. But Kol tells Rebekah he doesn’t care. “Then your even less of a man than I thought you were,” Rebekah says disgusted before walking off.

Meanwhile, Klaus wakes up and Elijah tells him that Freya channeled some of the dark magic into him (Elijah). “Niklaus if this is to be the end, you owe it to your family to your daughter to say goodbye.” “Please don’t lecture me Elijah.  You don’t know the agony of being a father of loving someone so much that you can’t bear to see them in pain,” Klaus says. But Elijah does know; he’s been a father to Klaus. “You’ve tried to orchestrate my life to make me a better man and for that I honor you,” Klaus says urging Elijah to let him do things his own way just this once.

After he leaves Elijah, Klaus runs into Caroline (Candice King). She tells him that she’s there to collect on a debt. Caroline plays a recording of a message from Klaus in which he promised to show her New Orleans.

Freya assures Vincent that their child would have a coven and a pack to protect it.  But Vincent refuses to bring a child into the messed up world.

Rebekah shares a drink with Marcel and talks about her brothers. “I have three brothers. One is a deserter. One is dying. And one is an enabling mess.” “I wonder what that says about me, I fought so hard to be one of you,” Marcel says. “That little fool is right, happiness is a choice,” Rebekah tells Marcel thinking of Kol’s words. Then, they kiss.

Caroline urges Klaus to say goodbye to his daughter. If he leaves Hope with questions, it will haunt her. “I don’t know how to say goodbye,” Klaus says emotionally. Caroline tells him after he says the words to walk towards the door without looking back. “It just means I’ll never forget you,” Caroline tells Klaus. Then, Caroline walks out of the room…without looking back.

At the mansion, Hope sadly tells Elijah that she can’t believe her father is not there to spend his last moments with her. Elijah tells his niece that she is everything to her father and he’s afraid. “You accomplished in fifteen years what I couldn’t in a thousand.” Klaus appears and asks Elijah for a moment alone with his daughter. Hope can’t understand why Klaus didn’t take Elijah up on his offer to take the entire dark magic. “What kind of man allows another man to die for his daughter?” Klaus asks.  He tells Hope that she’s given him something he’s never has before. “Unconditional love,” Klaus says.

When Keelin (Christina Moses) returns, Elijah, Freya, Marcel and Rebekah share stories about Klaus over the years. Kol joins the party and admits Rebekah was right…even though Klaus is an ass, he had to be there for him. Klaus appears and tells Kol he always adored his younger brother. Then, Klaus hugs Kol. “If this is to be my funeral, let’s get on with it,” Klaus tells the group.  The Mikaelsons sit down for a meal. Marcel assures Hope he’ll never abandon her…if she needs him, all she has to do is whisper his name and he’ll come. Klaus thanks his family for being in his life. He knows that when he’s gone, they will come together and be there for each other when needed. Then, Klaus spends some time with Hope. She promises that she’ll be okay.  She return to school and make him proud.

Afterwards, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah stroll down the quarter. Klaus tells Rebekah that he asked Caroline to get the cure for her and if she (Rebekah) decides that she doesn’t want to be a vampire, she can be human and live the life she always wanted. When Rebekah leaves, Klaus tells Elijah to go too as he doesn’t want his brother’s last memory of him to be his death. Elijah takes out the white oak stake and breaks it in half. Klaus reminds that the stake will still work in a shorten form.  Unless Elijah wants to keep it as a souvenir. “I intend to die by your side,” Elijah tells Klaus.  He explains that he doesn’t see a future for himself. “The purpose of my life. My unrelenting desire has always been your redemption,” Elijah tells Klaus. Elijah tells his brother that he told the family that he planned to follow Klaus to whatever lie beyond; Hope will have Freya and Marcel to look after her, and he told Kol that if he wasn’t there for Hope as well, he’d (Elijah) would come back to haunt him.

As Hope looks at a Mikaelson family portrait, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) watches over her daughter and smiles.

Vincent tells Freya and Keelin that he’s changed his mind about being the father to their child.

Rebekah goes to Marcel and tells him about the cure in Mystic Falls that will allow her to live a human life. “Marcel Gerard, I would very much like to be your wife,” Rebekah says. Marcel accepts her proposal.

Klaus asks Elijah what they will do if after death there’s nothing but darkness. “Then we face it together,” Elijah answers. “I don’t deserve the love you’ve given me brother, but I am so grateful,” Klaus says. “It’s been a glorious ride Niklaus and my greatest honor,” Elijah tells Klaus. With a nod, they push the white oak stakes into each other’s chests. Elijah and Klaus’ ashes fill the New Orleans skyline.

And with that, we say goodbye to The Originals.
